The Nelons
Daywind
From the May
2000 issue of CCM Magazine.
Experience counts. That statement sums up the 23rd
release from one of Southern gospel’s premiere groups,
The Nelons. Following After signals a number of transitions
for the Atlanta-based quintet. This is the first studio
project to feature new group members Paul Lancaster
(formally with Brentwood Music artist Sunday Drive)
and Melody Williams, as well as the first project after
group founder Rex Nelon’s death. He died unexpectedly
in January at age 67. Rex’s daughter, Kelly, has carried
on the tradition of quality evidenced by the 11 cuts
on the album. Following After leans heavily on The Nelons’
signature Southern gospel heritage with toe-tappin’,
head-noddin’ songs like "God Keeps a Candle," "You Ain’t
Seen the Last of Jesus" and "Carry the Glorious Gospel."
In only a few places do The Nelons veer from that style,
but when they do, the results are fresh and poignant.
"I Will Trust in the Lord," an inspirational ballad
featuring Lancaster (à la Michael English or Clay Crosse),
combines cinematic orchestration with determined lyrics.
Though recorded before Rex’s death, the ballad "Christians
Never Say Good-bye," is a fitting tribute to him and
other pioneers of the genre. Kelly’s sweet vocals combined
with the amazing promise of eternal life make this song
a standout.
