Transparemcee
MG the Visionary
Uprok
From the June
2000 issue of CCM Magazine.
Having plowed the underground scene for a decade under
the moniker 3nP (Third Nail Productions), MG is reaping
greatly with Tooth & Nail rap imprint Uprok Records.
His debut release Transparemcee is an explosion
of DJ-ing—by the likes of Melo-D (of the internationally
renowned World Famous Beat Junkies) and cameos by Pigeon
John of L.A. Symphony—and tight, live grooves. From
the start listeners will sense MG’s passionate madness
as he raps wildly over ultra-funky live vamps like "Interlude"
and the radio-ready "Compliments Of"(complete with R.
Kelly-like chorus). Audio whiplash occurs as MG intermittently
lulls listeners with acoustic guitars on various tracks
like the romantic "Let’s Cruise."
Like a cross between the Pharcyde and Wyclef of Fugees
fame, this CD is surprisingly accessible, mixing thick,
sing-songy rhymes with new and old school beats, cellos,
mariachi, bagpipes and probably even the kitchen sink.
Thumping through the stylistic gymnastics of Transparemcee
is the heart of a vulnerable, yet challenging hip-hop
evangelist. In keeping with the music, MG’s lyrics are
fun and engaging with topics that range from his love
of Seattle burger joints to the basic human need for
salvation in the face of death.
Transparemcee is a welcomed and wildly original
breath of funky air for those bored with by-the-numbers
hip-hop and Christian music.
