In the Myx
Kelli Williams
Myrrh
From the September
2000 issue of CCM Magazine.
Kelli Williams has given herself an
image overhaul, an outward sign
of a musical metamorphosis. She has
swapped the more conservative and
cuddly image of an aspiring teen diva found
on her first two albums for a fashionable,
cyber ice-princess guise with In the Myx.
What Williams hasn’t forsaken from previous efforts
is her soulfulness. She can exhibit only so much reserve.
"Fall Down 2000," a cover of Tramaine Hawkins’ ’80s
club jam, comes on like mid-tempo techno, but Williams
oozes emotion to contrast with the music’s crisp tone.
"Older," which references Tony! Toni! Toné!’s hipster
sophistication, and "Over and Over," influenced by Aaliyah’s
rhythmic complexity, elicit only more of Williams’ heart
on her sleeve. Just lovely.
In the Myx proffers a bold, eclectic direction
for R&B in any market. How long before others catch
up?
